Digitale Kameras haben häufig ein Problem mit Bildern, die einen großen Dynamikbereich aufweisen. Dadurch erscheinen Lichter (die sehr hellen Bildteile) und Tiefen (die dunklen Bildteile) oft zu extrem. Es ist aber mit Hilfe von Photoshop möglich, diese Extrembereiche so zu bearbeiten, daß sowohl Lichter als auch Tiefen mehr Zeichnung aufweisen. Die Version 8 (auch bekannt als CS) führt sogar eine spezielle Funktion dafür ein.

Digital cameras have commonly problems with pictures, that show a great dynamic range. Therefore highlights (bright parts of the image) and shadows (dark part) appear extrem. With the help of Photoshop, it is possible to process the extreme parts, that highlight and the shadows show more drawing. Version 8 (aka Photoshop CS) actually introduces a scecial feature for this problem.

Im folgenden Tutorial können Sie eine Möglichkeit kennenlernen, wie man Lichter und Tiefen auch in älteren Photoshopversionen (ab Version 5) bearbeiten kann.

Bewegen Sie die Maus über das Bild um ein Beispiel des Effekts zu sehen. Im Original sind die dunklen Bildteile fast flächig, der Himmel wirkt etwas flau. Das Ergebnis ist ein dramatischer Himmel und deutlich besser gezeichnete Tiefen.

Move your mouse over the image to see an example of the effect. The original shows almost flat shadows and the sky is a bit dull. The result of this tutorial is more dramatic sky and way more drawing in the shadows.

Zuerst duplizieren wir die Hintergrundebene zweimal (Ebene > Ebene duplizieren), und benennen die entstehenden Ebenen "Tiefen" und "Lichter".

Duplicate the background layer twice (Layers > Duplicate Layer) and call them "Highlights" and "Shadows".

Dann in den Lab-Modus (Bild > Modus > Lab-Farbe) wechseln und die Lab-Helligkeit als Auswahl laden. Das geht am einfachsten, wenn man mit gedrückter Strg-Taste (Apfel-Taste) auf den Kanal klickt.

Convert the image to Lab-Color (Image > Mode > Lab-Color) and load the Lab-Brightness as selection. The easiest way to do this, is clicking on the channel while pressing the Ctrl-key (Apple-key).

Jetzt wählen wir, wieder auf der Ebenenpalette, die Ebene "Tiefen" an und fügen eine Ebenenmaske hinzu (Ebene > Ebenenmaske hinzufügen > Auswahl maskieren). Eine Ebenenmaske ist ein "Alpha-Kanal", also ein Transparenzkanal einer bestimmten Ebene. Helle Bereiche auf der Ebenenmaske zeigen die Ebene, dunkle Bereiche blenden die Ebene aus.

Now, back on the layers palette, select the layer "shadows" and add a layermask (Layers > Add Layermask > Mask Selection). A layermask is an "alpha-channel", a channel which contains the transparency of a layer. Bright areas of the layermask will reveal the layer, dark areas will hide the layer.

Wir wiederholen den Vorgang mit der Ebene "Lichter", maskieren aber diesmal außerhalb der Auswahl. Das heißt die entstehende Ebenenmaske ist ungekehrt von der Ebenenmaske der "Tiefen"-Ebene.

Repeat the operation with the "Highlights"-layer, but this time we mask outside of the selection. That means the generated layermask will be a inverted version of the first layermask we created.

Die Ebenenpalette sollte jetzt in etwa so aussehen. Man sieht die Hintergrundebene mit dem Ausgangsbild, die Ebene "Tiefen" mit der Ebenenmaske und die Ebene "Lichter" mit der Ebenenmaske. Das Symbol zwischen dem Auge (Ebene sichtbar) und die Umrahmung der Miniatur zeigt an, was man gerade bearbeitet. In diesem Fall wird gerade die Maskenebene der Ebene "Lichter" bearbeitet. Mit einem Klick auf die entsprechende Miniatur kann man zwischen den verschiedenen Ebenen und Masken hin- und herschalten.

The layers palette should look like this now. You can see the background layer with our initial image, the layers "Shadows" and "Highlight" each with it's layermask. The symbol between the eye (shows if layer is visible) and the layerminiature shows, what part is getting processed. In this case it's the layermask of the "Highlights" layer. A click on the according miniature will switch between layers and masks.

Als nächstes werden die Tonwerte der Maske "Tiefen" so verändert, daß nur noch die sehr dunken Bereiche der Ebene sichtbar bleiben. Dazu verwenden wir die Tonwertkorrektur (Bild > Einstellungen > Tonwertkorrektur ...) [Strg + L].

Now we change the levels of the "Shadows" mask in order to reveal only the darkest areas of the image (Image > Settings > Levels) or [Ctrl + L].

Dann verändern wir auf die selbe Weise die Maske der Ebene "Lichter" und lassen nur noch sehr helle Bereiche durchscheinen.

Then we change the "Highlights" mask in the same way and reveal only the brightest ares of the layer.

Nun zeichnen wir beide Masken weich. (Filter > Weichzeuchnungsfilter > Gaußscher Weichzeichner). Wenn man einen Effekt einmal ausgeführt hat, kann man den Effekt mit den gleichen Einstellungen weitere Male mit dem Tastenkürzel [Strg+F] anwenden. Welchen Wert man hierfür verwendet ist abhängig von Motiv und Geschmack. Alle Werte von 0 bis 500 sind denkbar.

Next we blur both masks (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur). If you have applied an effect you can recall this effect using the same setting with the shortcut [Ctrl + F]. The settings of the Gaussian Blur depends on the motiv and your personal taste. All settings between 0 and 500 are possible.

Jetzt kommen wir zu eigentlichen Bildkorrektur. Dazu kann man verschiedene Werkzeuge verwenden. Beispielhaft werden hier die Gradationskurven verwendet. Wir wählen also die Ebene "Tiefen" aus, öffnen den Dialog Gradationskurven (Bild > Einstellungen > Gradationskurven ...) [Strg+M] und biegen die Lab-Helligkeit nach oben. ACHTUNG: Verschiedene Versionen von Photoshop verhalten sich hier unterschiedlich. Mit einem Klick auf verhält sich aber auch die Version 5 wie neuere Versionen.

Now we do the actual image correction. You can use different tools for it. Exemplary the curves were used here. You select the layer "Shadows" open the dialog Curves (Image > Settings > Curves) or [Ctrl + M] and correct the Lab-Brightness. ATTENTION: Different versions of Photoshop behave differently. With a click on the version 5 works like the newer ones.

Nun verändern wir noch die Ebene "Lichter" mit den Gradationskurven. Durch die angeklickte Vorschau kann man schon während der Korrektur das Ergebnis kontrollieren.

We select the "Highlights" layer and apply curves again. If preview is checked you can control the output during the correction.

Zum Schluß das Bild wieder in RGB-Modus (Bild > Modus > RGB-Farbe) zurück wandeln und auf die Hintergrundebene reduzieren.

At last convert the image back to RBG-mode (Image > Mode > Lab Color) and flatten the image.

A more elegant solution can be found if you use setting layers which where introduced with Photoshop 7. You convert the image to Lab-color and load the Lab-Brightness as selection. Then you just have to create two setting layers with curves and process the masks as supplied before with levels and Gaussian blur. The special advantage of setting layers is, that you can adjust you corrections several times, because the original image stays actually untouched until you flatten the image.

Prinzipiell kann man zum Einsatz solcher Techniken sagen: "Weniger ist mehr". Lieber ganz sanfte Korrekturen anwenden. Zu starke Veränderungen sehen meistens unrealistisch aus. Man kann das natürlich als Effekt benutzen sollte sich aber dessen wirklich bewußt sein.

About this technique can be said in general: "less is more". Try to apply corretions very gently. Heavy changes mostly look very unrealistic. You can use this technique as an effect, but you have to be aware of it.

Jede neue Version von Photoshop bringt eine Unmenge an neuen, "tollen" Funktionen mit sich. Wie man an diesem Beispiel sehen kann, lassen sich aber viele dieser Funktionen mit entsprechendem Wissen auch mit älteren Programmversionen nachvollziehen. Es spricht also häufig nichts gegen eine günstig bei eBay erstandene ältere Version. Gerade Hobbyfotografen sollten lieber lernen, die älteren Versionen voll auszunützen, bevor sie sich von den neuesten Features blenden lassen. Außerdem ist selbst die neuste Version, des für Hobbyfotografen gedachten Photoshop Elements, der Version 5 von Photoshop noch weit unterlegen – wenn man die angebotenen Funtionen zu nutzen weiß.

Every new version of Photoshop introduces a lot of new, "exciting" features. As you can see on this example, many of these features can be done in earlier versions, if you have the appropriate knowledge. There militates nothing agains cheap older versions you get from eBay. Especially shutterbugs should prefer to learn to use all feature of an older version, than to get blinded by the newest features. Above all the newst version of Photoshop Elements, which is especially made for shutterbugs, is inferior even version 5 of the real Photoshop - if you know how to use the given features.
